Nigeria’s Rivers United suffered a late defeat at the hands of Berkane at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.
After going one up through an own goal in the 38th minute of the first half, when the Moroccan side’s player Camara deflected the ball into his own net, the Port Harcourt based team held on to the lead for a long period of the encounter. Failing time and again to convert clear cut chances to double their lead, they paid for their lack of decisiveness after a defensive error gave the Moroccan side a lifeline in the 97th minute of the game via an El Kabbi goal.
One would have thought that there would be no more dramas, but somehow Rivers United goalkeeper Onisodumeya failed his teammates when he played an open clearance directly on the back of his opponent despite having all the time in the world to make the clearance prior to the error, eventually leading to a survival race to clear the ball at the back which Chuolar eventually came out on top to make the score 1-2.

The defeat suffered by Rivers United reveals how dim the light of Nigerian football keeps dwindling, as the only remaining team from the Nigerian league would be exiting the CAF Champions League early if they fail to put up a strong show by winning at least three of their remaining four games.
This is how Group A of the CAF Champions League stands for now:
