Rivers Government Cautions LGAs to Ensure Fair Distribution of Flood Relief Materials

The Rivers State Government has called on Local Government Areas benefiting from the ongoing distribution of flood relief materials to ensure transparent and equitable sharing of the items among affected residents.

This appeal was made on Wednesday during the handover of relief materials to Opobo/Nkoro and Bonny LGAs at the Central Medical Stores in Port Harcourt. The items were distributed by the State Flood Prevention and Management Committee.

Speaking on behalf of the committee’s chairperson, Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, the Vice Chairman and Head of Service, Dr. Iyingi Brown, said the relief effort reflects the state government’s commitment to easing the hardship experienced by communities impacted by recent flooding.

Brown stressed that the administration of Governor Siminalayi Fubara remained determined to support displaced families and restore a sense of belonging to affected communities. She warned that the relief items must be used strictly for humanitarian purposes.

“These items should not be sold or diverted,” she said. “They are meant solely to support families and individuals who have been displaced or affected by the recent flood.”

Receiving the materials for Opobo/Nkoro, the LGA Chairman, Barrister James A. James, thanked Governor Fubara for the intervention, describing him as “a father and a man of the people.” He assured that the distribution would be supervised to ensure the aid reaches those in need.

Hon. Tonye Jumbo, Council Secretary of Bonny LGA, who represented the chairman, also expressed appreciation to the state government and the flood committee. He pledged that the materials would be shared evenly and transparently across communities affected by the disaster.
