NOSDRA Warns Against Rising Illegal Oil Waste Disposal in Rivers Communities

‎The National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) has reported credible cases of improper disposal of base oil and drilling mud in Iriebe and Igbo-Etche communities, Rivers State, by unidentified individuals.

‎Describing the act as “unacceptable,”NOSDRA’s Executive Director, Chukwuemeka Woke, stressed that such acts, poses serious threats to the environment, public health, and safety of the State.

‎ He established that such exercise violate the Agency’s Oil Spill and Oily Waste Management Regulations (S.I. 26 of 2011).

‎Mr.Woke further disclosed that in collaboration with the Rivers State Ministry of Environment and other stakeholders, NOSDRA has begun preliminary site inspections and environmental sampling.

‎“The Agency is committed to a thorough investigation and will ensure that any person or group found responsible is sanctioned in line with the law,” he emphasized.

‎The agency reminded operators, contractors, and service providers that the handling and disposal of oily waste, including drilling mud, must adhere strictly to approved standards.

‎NOSDRA therefore called on communities, industry workers, and the public to remain vigilant and report any illegal waste disposal, oil spills, or pipeline vandalism immediately.
