Ayra Starr Relocates To New York

In a step for international ambitions, Afrobeat’s breakout star Ayra Starr has officially confirmed her relocation to the bustling hub of New York City. The move is described by the artist as a deliberate strategy to fortify her burgeoning presence on the world stage.

The award-winning vocalist, 23, disclosed that she has already been acclimating to life in the American urban center for nearly two months. This transcontinental shift, she revealed, was driven by a dual appeal to both her creative aspirations and her desire for a compatible living environment.

She elaborated that the city’s prolific and diverse artistic landscape makes it a fertile ground for generating new work, establishing cross-cultural creative partnerships, and amplifying her reach to a global audience. The transition, according to the singer, has been remarkably seamless, a fact she attributes to the city’s powerful resonance with her hometown of Lagos.

Drawing a parallel between the two metropolises, she portrayed them as sharing an unmistakable vitality, an unrelenting pace, and a palpable energy that made her feel an instant connection. This sense of familiarity is further deepened by the city’s demographic makeup.

Ayra Starr specifically highlighted the influential and widespread Nigerian and broader African communities that thrive in New York. This robust diaspora network, she noted, provides a crucial sense of cultural belonging and support, making her feel at ease despite the distance from her native country.

“New York reminds me so much of Lagos, so it feels like home,” she said. “There are a lot of Nigerians here. There’s a huge African diaspora here, so I feel comfortable and welcomed.”
