Activist Calls on Government to Beef Up Security at Learning Centres

Government have been called to provide adequate security and sensitization in other to protect women and girls from violence.

This call was made by a member of the international federation of women lawyers, FIDA, Mrs. Olawunmi Omoniyi in an interview with newsmen.

Mrs Omoniyi stated that there are numerous laws enshrined in the Nigerian constitution protecting women and children against violence but listed lack of the willpower to implement these laws as factors militating against the protection of the female folks.

“Collaborating with NGOs like FIDA to sensitise women, children even the society on the need to speak up when there is violence or issues that borders on women and children in the society.

There is no reason to be afraid of anything. If you don’t speak up no body would know what you are passing through,” she said.

Mrs Omoniyi emphasized that the Government should provide security cameras in public schools especially in the north where there is recurrent abduction of school girls. “The security measure in schools are in two ways.

When you go to some public schools, you just walk in without anybody asking you questions.

The policy the government had to put in place is to revamp security operation in the country. It is not enough to put arm men on our roads they should also be in our schools,” she emphasised.

The legal practitioner added that children should be taught to be vigilant and report any suspected case of violence and abuse of women and girls to appropriate authorities.
