TAF Africa Hosts Disability-Inclusion-in-Governance Training for Desk Officers in Rivers State MDAs

In a major step toward strengthening inclusive governance in Rivers State, the Head of Service of Rivers State Dr.Inyingi Brown reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to advancing the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities.

The HOS who was represented by Mr. Chimenum Mpi in his remarks during a Disability Inclusion in Governance training for Disability and Gender Desk Officers organized by TAF Africa in Port harcourt emphasized that Rivers State being a pioneer in inclusion efforts, is determined to strengthen institutional frameworks that promote accessibility and equal participation.

“This training is a call to action. A call to strengthen institutional frameworks for inclusion. A call to rethink how we design our offices, our services, and our communication. A call to build a public service where every persons with disability can participate fully and confidently.” He stated.

“The Rivers State Government remains committed to supporting and strengthening institutional frameworks when it comes to promoting inclusion for persons with disabilities. He added.

In her goodwill message, Executive Director FAECARE, Mrs Ndifreke Andrew-Essien commended the establishment of Disability and Gender Desk Officers across the state, describing it as a moment worthy of celebration. She urged participants to view their appointment as a call to service rather than an addition to their résumés.

“Let it not be that the task put in your hands fails, because this is not about your CV but about the heart of your office. I am certain that with the people gathered here today, Rivers State will be named among the most inclusive states in Nigeria,” she said.

In his keynote address, the guest speaker Dr. Krakrafaa Bestman underscored the critical role of Disability Desk Officers in implementing policy.

“Those appointed as desk officers for disability are expected to translate policies into actions. Our society should be designed so that whether you have a disability or not, you can perform your civic obligations.” he noted.

Also, Ambassador Jake Epelle, Founder and CEO of TAF Africa, commended the Rivers state Governor and the Head of Service for their commitment towards the inclusion and reiterated TAF Africa’s commitment to deepening its partnership with the state.

“We will continue to work with the Rivers State Government, as they have provided the space and support to promote inclusive governance. We will not stop at the local government level but extend our efforts to the executive, legislative, and judicial arms to ensure inclusion across all sectors.”

He further highlighted the significance of the initiative, noting that Rivers State is among the first in Nigeria to institutionalize disability desk officers across local governments.

“The importance of disability desk officers in every institution cannot be overstated, because this is a system that ensures no one is left behind. This step is both interesting and commendable. I congratulate the Office of the Head of Service and the Governor of Rivers State,” Epelle said.

The event, held in Port Harcourt, brought together key government officials, civil society partners, and inclusion advocates, marking a historic milestone in the state’s public service reforms.

The training equipped participants with practical tools to mainstream disability considerations into policies, programs, and service delivery.

Stakeholders expressed optimism that the initiative will accelerate Rivers State’s transformation into a truly inclusive state for persons with disabilities.
