In a bid to forestall further tension, the Executive Chairmen of Etche and Ikwerre Local Government Areas, Chief Hon. Chima Boniface Njoku and Hon. Charles Wobo respectively, has constituted a seven-man joint committee to mediate in the protracted land dispute between the Chokocho community in Etche and neighbouring Omuwei community in Ikwerre.
The chairmen announced the decision yesterday after jointly undertaking an on-the-spot assessment of the contentious parcel of land that has for years been a source of friction between the two neighbouring communities in Rivers State.
Speaking during the visit, Chief Hon. Njoku stressed the need for peaceful co-existence, saying both councils were committed to finding an amicable and lasting resolution. Hon. Wobo echoed the sentiment, describing the dispute as “a family matter that must not be allowed to degenerate into violence.”
The newly inaugurated seven-man committee, comprising representatives from both local government areas, has been mandated to investigate the root causes of the disagreement, consult widely with stakeholders, and submit a comprehensive report and recommendations to the two chairmen within a stipulated timeframe.

In a joint directive, the chairmen warned residents of Chokocho and Omuwei against any form of development, farming, construction or encroachment on the disputed territory pending the committee’s findings and final resolution.
The intervention has been widely welcomed by community leaders who expressed optimism that the impartial panel will pave the way for permanent peace and harmonious relationships between the two communities.
The committee is expected to commence work immediately.
