OpenAI Introduces Group Chats In ChatGPT

OpenAI has launched group chat functionality in ChatGPT for users around the world, making it easier for people to interact with the chatbot together. A week ago, OpenAI began testing this feature in a limited trial in some regions.

In the coming days, all registered users will gain access to group chats. According to OpenAI, this update transforms ChatGPT from a personal assistant into a collaborative space where friends, family, or coworkers can plan, create, decide, and work together.

The company envisions group chats being used for a variety of purposes: organizing trips, co-authoring documents, resolving disagreements, or doing research. In these chats, ChatGPT can help by researching, summarizing information, and comparing different options.

Up to 20 people can participate in a group chat. Each user’s personal settings and memory remain private, and future updates are expected to bring more flexible configuration options.

To start a group chat, users click the “People” icon to add participants, or they can share a link. When joining, users will be asked to create a small profile including their name and photo.

Adding someone new to a chat doesn’t change the original conversation — it begins a fresh thread, keeping the old one intact.

You’ll find group chats in a new section on the app’s sidebar.

OpenAI also revealed that ChatGPT will now “understand” when to join a conversation. The assistant can respond with emojis, mention profile pictures, and it’s powered by the GPT-5.1 Auto model.

Inside the chat, users can search for information, send images and files, generate pictures, or dictate text. Responses from ChatGPT are subject to rate limits, and the limits depend on the user’s subscription plan.
