Free Nigeria- Burnaboy

‎‎Renowned Nigerian singer Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, stirred debate online after using a moment in his sold-out Los Angeles concert to address political tensions currently shaping conversations across Nigeria and other African nations.

‎In a viral video widely shared on social media, the Afrobeat legend and Grammy winner briefly paused his live performance to speak on humanitarian crises happening in Nigeria, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

‎As the crowd cheered, Burna Boy declared:

‎ “Free Sudan, free Nigeria, because that’s what’s important to me.”

‎His comment, though brief, connected strongly with many Nigerians who say the country has been struggling with insecurity, civil unrest, economic hardship, and mounting public frustration.

‎Some social media users praised the singer for echoing sentiments that mirror Nigeria’s current climate, where public figures are increasingly pressured to speak up about national issues.

‎However, the message also sparked criticisms, with a section of Nigerians suggesting it was a strategic attempt at “damage control” following earlier controversies surrounding his relationship with African audiences. The mixed reactions quickly dominated online discussions, reflecting the sensitivity and complexity of Nigeria’s ongoing challenges.

‎After delivering his statement, Burna Boy returned to full performance mode, thrilling the massive American crowd with his chart-topping hit  “Last Last”. Shirtless and swinging his top in the air, he kept the energy high as fans cheered him on.

‎The moment has reopened conversations about how Nigerian entertainers engage with political issues and the influence their statements carry on global stages.
