FIDA Calls for Increased Vigilance to Protect Children from Abuse

The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Rivers State Branch, has urged individuals and institutions to be more vigilant and proactive in safeguarding children, particularly those who are most vulnerable.

Vice-Chairperson of FIDA Rivers, Dr. Vivian Akunesiobike, made the call on 18 November during an event in Port Harcourt to mark the World Day for Prevention of and Healing from Child Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Violence.

Dr. Akunesiobike expressed concern that many children continue to suffer in silence from various forms of abuse, with numerous cases remaining unreported. She noted that survivors often struggle without adequate support, stressing the need for stronger community and institutional action.

She reaffirmed FIDA’s commitment to ensuring that justice is served for every abused child, regardless of gender. According to her, child sexual abuse is not only a violation of human rights but also an attack on the foundation of society.

The FIDA Vice-Chairperson said the association remains steadfast in advocating stronger legal protections, timely prosecution of offenders, and survivor-centered support services. She emphasized that preventing abuse requires intentional effort and collective responsibility.

“To the survivors, we see you, we believe you, and we stand with you. Healing is possible, and justice is your right,” she said.

FIDA Rivers called on the public to move beyond awareness and take concrete action toward building a society where every child grows in safety, dignity, and hope.
