Akuku-Toru LG Chairman Vows Premium Healthcare Delivery

The Chairman of Akuku-Toru Local Government Area, Rt. Hon. Aboiya-a Bob-Fubara, has declared healthcare delivery as the cornerstone of his administration, promising “premium, people-centred services” across the riverine council.

Speaking on Tuesday 18th November at the council secretariat in Abonnema while receiving a delegation of primary healthcare workers on a congratulatory visit, the chairman described a healthy population as “the bedrock of any meaningful development.”

He noted that primary healthcare workers remain the first and often the only point of medical contact for our riverine communities,” he said, hailing them as “critical pillars” of the health system.

Leading the delegation, Administrative Secretary Melford Otelemaba congratulated the chairman on his election victory but also raised longstanding concerns, including unpaid salary differentials and promotion arrears spanning several years.

He stressed that settling these obligations would boost morale and improve service delivery in a terrain where poor infrastructure and difficult waterways continue to hinder healthcare access.

Akuku-Toru, one of Rivers State’s oil-producing Niger Delta LGAs, has long battled with underfunding, staff shortages, and dilapidated facilities, many lacking electricity, essential drugs, and functional equipment.

The chairman’s pledge comes against the backdrop of persistent challenges to immunisation, maternal care, and disease prevention programmes in the state’s riverine communities.

Observers say Hon. Bob-Fubara’s commitment will be judged by swift action on workers’ welfare and tangible upgrades to the area’s ailing health infrastructure.
