YEAC-Nigeria Pushes for Stronger Measures Against Organized Crime

The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria) has joined Nigeria and the global community to commemorate the International Day for the Prevention of and Fight against All Forms of Transnational Organized Crime celebrated on November 15, 2025.

This year’s theme, “Follow the money. Stop organized crime,” underscores the urgent need to target and dismantle the financial systems that sustain criminal networks and hinder sustainable national development.

YEAC-Nigeria, a leading think-tank on organized crime and mitigation strategies, said transnational criminal activities continue to wreak havoc on communities, economies, and ecosystems, particularly in the Niger Delta and the Gulf of Guinea.

In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Dr. Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface, the organization highlighted the far-reaching consequences of crimes such as human and wildlife trafficking, crude oil theft, illegal bunkering, drug trafficking, arms smuggling, corruption, cybercrime, and various forms of human exploitation.

The group recalled its National Conference on Organised Crime in Nigeria and the Gulf of Guinea held in April 2023, which brought together key stakeholders, experts, and policymakers. At the event, former President Muhammadu Buhari, who attended as Special Guest of Honour, stressed the need for coordinated and sustained efforts, describing organized crime as “a cancer that eats away at the fabric of our society.”

YEAC-Nigeria urged the Federal Government to intensify its fight against transnational crime by strengthening law enforcement, boosting international collaboration, and ensuring greater transparency and accountability across institutions.

The group also called on Nigerian youth to actively contribute to the fight by reporting suspicious activities, supporting anti-corruption campaigns, and promoting integrity within their communities.

According to the organization, collective action is essential to “follow the money, stop organized crime, and build a safer, more just, and prosperous Nigeria.”
