We Want Okoye To Replace Nwabali – Nigerians

After the return of the Nigerian international goalkeeper Okoye to the goalposts, recent reports have it that there are increasing demands from the former Super Eagle player on Monday, 3rd of November, during a podcast session for the Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye to take over from Chippa United’s Stanley Nwabali as the Super Eagles’ primary goalkeeper in anticipation of Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs next week.

‎Unarguably, ‘the giant of Africa’ Nigeria is set to lock-horns against Gabon in the first semi-final of the World Cup playoffs in Rabat, Morocco, on Thursday, 13 November. Any of the team between the competitors that emerge victorious in this match will face the winner of the clash between Cameroon and DR Congo for a spot in the intercontinental play-offs for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

‎Away from the playoffs fixtures, looking into the Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles’ squad, as the World Cup playoffs approach, Nwabali’s role as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper is being challenged due to Okoye’s remarkable performances. However, the Chippa United’s goalstopper Nwabali has faced criticism for his recent displays with the Super Eagles.

‎On a one hand, Statistics shows that his Nwabali’s recent performance has been inconsistent, and his decision-making in high-pressure situations has raised concerns. It has however shown, several on-field incidents have further fueled worries regarding his temperament. The Nigerian international goalkeeper has been out of form in his latest appearances for the Super Eagles.

‎On that note, tensions escalated during Nigeria’s 4-0 win over the Benin Republic at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium when Nwabali had a confrontation with teammate Calvin Bassey at halftime.

‎Report have it that, former Nigeria defender Sam Sodje called on Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle after the match for a tête-à-tête to replace Nwabali if he believes the Chippa United goalkeeper could jeopardize Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the World Cup.

‎”When you have players like Stanley, the way he plays, speaks, and presents himself, there is a distinction between confidence and a poor attitude,” Sodje remarked.

‎”If the coach thinks Stanley might cost us the game, it is advisable to make the change now before it becomes too late.

‎”He has been signaling that he might do something reckless soon. This is where a psychologist could be beneficial.”

‎Conversely, Okoye may provide the steady influence that the Super Eagles have been missing in their recent matches.

‎Okoye’s performance against Russia in a friendly match last June, conducted in the daunting atmosphere within the stadium, showcased his potential.
