‎Meta Release Update on How WhatsApp Usernames Will Work

‎WhatsApp has been developing a username feature for what seems like an eternity, with details gradually emerging about how this highly requested option will function. There are numerous reasons for desiring usernames, not least of which is that it simply makes sense, as it aligns with the practices of nearly every other social networking or messaging platform.

‎Meta has already indicated that it believes usernames will enhance security, and the most recent beta version of the Android app provides further insights. Specifically, this latest release demonstrates how users will be able to search by username and make calls without needing to know someone’s phone number.

‎Usernames are significantly easier to remember; thus, if someone shares their username with you, you are far more likely to recall it than if you were given a phone number. Additionally, the tendency for most individuals to choose the same username they use on other platforms will reduce the necessity to even ask in certain situations.

‎In the latest Android beta, WABetaInfo has identified the recent advancements implemented by WhatsApp developers. The site elaborates:

‎WhatsApp is developing a new feature that will enable users to make voice and video calls using usernames instead of phone numbers. This update aims to streamline how individuals connect on the platform while safeguarding their privacy.

Usernames will serve as a public identity, allowing users to communicate without revealing their actual phone numbers. This facilitates the initiation of conversations and calls, particularly with individuals who are not yet saved in your contact list.

‎Although the option to reserve a unique username will be introduced in a forthcoming update, the primary emphasis is on enabling seamless username-based calling.

This indicates that users will soon be able to initiate calls directly through a username search, similar to other popular messaging applications. This change signifies a significant advancement toward a more adaptable and privacy-focused communication experience.

‎Users will need to navigate to the search bar located on the Calls tab to perform a search for a name, number, or username. It is feasible to search for individuals who are not present in your contact list, which some may perceive as a privacy concern in its own right.

‎However, WhatsApp’s objective is primarily to facilitate easier connections among users. Calls made using usernames will benefit from the same security measures as those made using phone numbers, but there is more to it.

‎WhatsApp is also testing an extra layer of security known as the username key. This optional feature will function as a private access code that restricts who can contact you via a username call. If the username key is activated, only individuals who have an ongoing chat with you or those who possess your shared key will be able to initiate a call. This mechanism ensures that unknown users or potential spammers cannot reach you without your consent.

‎When a user inputs the correct username key, the system will authenticate it and subsequently allow the call to proceed as usual. This system would help prevent unwanted calls while ensuring a seamless calling experience for trusted contacts.

For users who value their privacy, the username key will provide a robust method to maintain control over their visibility. By merging convenience with security, WhatsApp seeks to make username-based communication both safe and accessible for all.
