IPC Hosts Women Journalists on Safety Measures in Nigeria

As part of activities marking the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists (IDEI), the International Press Centre (IPC), through its Safety and Protection of Journalists (SPJ) Hub, has organized a conversation on the growing threats faced by women journalists in both digital and physical spaces.

The IDEI, declared by UNESCO and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, is commemorated annually to advocate for justice and accountability in crimes against journalists worldwide.

Scheduled for Monday, November 3, 2025, the IPC event will spotlight the Centre’s recent publication, “The Unseen Enablers,” and present an analytical overview of trends in attacks on women journalists between 2020 and 2025.

In a statement on Sunday, November 2, 2025, IPC Executive Director, Mr. Lanre Arogundade, explained that the 2025 IDEI theme “Chat GBV: Raising Awareness on AI-facilitated Gender-Based Violence against Women Journalists” serves as a call to action to end impunity for crimes targeting journalists, with a special focus this year on women practitioners in Nigeria.

“We cannot turn a blind eye to attacks against journalists.

“At IPC, we place the highest priority on the safety of journalists and media professionals. We oppose any form of action, legislation, or political pressure that undermines press freedom.

“Acts of intimidation and violence against journalists must end for democracy to thrive.”

The Twitter (X) Space conversation will feature a panel discussion with four notable speakers, IPC Board Member and Executive Director, Illuminate Nigeria; Anikeade Funke-Treasure, Former Chairperson, Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ); Ladi Bala, Director General, Imo Broadcasting Commission; Ify Onyegbule and Jadesola Ajibola, Executive Director, Gender Alive Foundation.

The panelists will share insights and strategies on addressing threats to women journalists, emphasizing collective action to ensure safer digital and physical work environments.
