Family Accuses Football Academy of Cover-Up in Alleged Rape Case

The family of a 13-year-old female student of the Real Madrid Football Academy, Rivers State, has accused the school of attempting to cover up an alleged rape case of their daughter by a 17-year-old male classmate within the academy premises.

The victim’s elder brother, Uche Sampson, told journalists that the incident occurred on October 22, 2025, inside the school’s hostel located along Stadium Road, Elekahia, Port Harcourt.

According to Sampson, his sister, a Junior Secondary School 2 (JSS2) student, was attacked by a male student while she went to retrieve her washed clothes after dinner.

“After dinner around 7 p.m., she went downstairs to collect her clothes when she saw the boy around the hostel. She asked what he was doing there, but he only laughed. Suddenly, he hit her on the back and chest, and a struggle ensued. He overpowered her, smashed her head on the staircase and gained access to her through her anus,” Sampson narrated.

He alleged that despite his sister sustaining injuries and bleeding, the school failed to provide medical care or take disciplinary action against the suspect. Instead, she was reportedly sent home.

“The school is trying to quench the matter,” he alleged.

When contacted, the Principal of the Real Madrid Football Academy declined to comment, referring inquiries to the Permanent Secretary of the Rivers State Ministry of Sports.

Confirming the development, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Superintendent of Police (SP) Grace Iringe-Koko, said the Elekahia Police Division had received a complaint from the victim’s family and that an investigation was ongoing.

Meanwhile, human rights advocate and National Coordinator of the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, Prince Wiro, condemned the school’s handling of the matter. He faulted the management for allowing the suspect’s parents to take him away instead of handing him over to the police.

Wiro called on the Rivers State Ministries of Sports and Education to ensure the suspect is produced for an impartial investigation.
