Super Eagles’ Struggling Pass Mentality Must be Curbed – Gowon

‎When the draw for the 2026 World Cup African qualifying series took place in July 2023, numerous football enthusiasts were convinced that Nigeria would qualify effortlessly from Group C, given the calibre of players available for selection and the Super Eagles’ esteemed reputation on the continent. However, this expectation was not realised. Gowon Akpodonor examines the factors that contributed to Nigeria’s failure to qualify directly.

‎The Super Eagles, Nigeria’s senior national football team, which once held the title of the fifth-best team in the world, is now regarded as one of the most unpredictable teams in international football.

‎The illustration of this inconsistency is straightforward. Just a few months prior, the team decisively overcame some of the top teams in African football, yet it unexpectedly faltered against lesser opponents such as Lesotho, Zimbabwe, and Rwanda during the 2026 World Cup qualifying series.

‎It is not that the team is unaware of the importance of participating in the FIFA World Cup, recognised as the second-largest sporting event globally. Instead, Nigeria’s misfortune is predominantly self-inflicted, as the Super Eagles effectively squandered their chance to return to the World Cup through the African qualifiers.

‎While the strategies for FIFA World Cup qualifiers differ from one nation to another, it is widely acknowledged that a team needs thorough preparation, steadfast technical and tactical backing from the coaching staff, and disciplined management of off-field pressures and logistics.

‎This encompasses establishing a professional atmosphere where the football association backs the coaching staff, avoids meddling in technical decisions, manages travel and accommodation efficiently, and ensures that players are mentally equipped to handle intense pressure and media attention.

‎This indicates that football associations are required to permit the coach to select the team according to their technical and tactical requirements, manage all travel logistics, secure standard accommodations, organise training facilities, and ensure the provision of appropriate meals when the team is scheduled to compete internationally.

‎In order to foster team cohesion, the FA must also guarantee that the technical and tactical choices made by the team are not frequently questioned by committees, as this could foster a detrimental atmosphere.

‎Experts assert that for effective technical and tactical execution, both players and coaches need to formulate a robust strategy that can be consistently implemented throughout the qualifying series, similar to how coaches are expected to comprehend and handle the significant pressure from the media, the expectations of fans, and national pride to prevent adverse effects on confidence and mental well-being.

‎Although talent is essential, maintaining consistent performance over the extended qualifying duration is vital, as any lackadaisical attitude from the players could lead to catastrophic consequences in the pursuit of the qualification spot.
