FG Releases ₦32.9bn to Boost Primary Healthcare

The Federal Government has approved and disbursed ₦32.9 billion under the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) to strengthen primary healthcare services across Nigeria — marking the third release in 2025.

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, emphasizing the need for transparency and community involvement in managing the funds.

According to him, the funds are intended to improve infrastructure, provide essential drugs, and support emergency medical services at grassroots health facilities nationwide.

“This money is not sitting in Abuja; it has already begun its journey into the commercial bank accounts of primary healthcare facilities in every ward across Nigeria,” Pate said. “It is your clinic’s money, your community’s chance, your country’s promise.”

He explained that each facility has the autonomy to plan and utilise the funds in partnership with community stakeholders such as ward health committees, traditional rulers, women and youth groups, and faith-based organisation.

The minister, however, lamented the lack of citizen oversight, stressing that silence from community members often leads to mismanagement.

“Too often, communities stand aside. When that happens, silence becomes a loss,” he warned.

Pate urged Nigerians to take ownership of the programme by monitoring, questioning, and celebrating visible improvements in their health facilities.

“Each naira in this ₦32.9 billion is a seed. When nurtured with vigilance, it grows into better care, safe births, and lives saved,” he added.

The BHCPF, created under the National Health Act, remains a key vehicle for expanding access to quality and affordable healthcare, especially for vulnerable Nigerians.
