Osimhen Can’t Do It Alone, Akpeyi Tells Super Eagles

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has cautioned that Nigeria’s increasing reliance on Victor Osimhen could become a significant vulnerability as the team gears up for the essential FIFA World Cup qualification playoffs against Gabon.

Akpeyi, who played for Nigeria at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, noted that while Osimhen’s talent is undeniable, the team’s dependence on the striker for goals has highlighted their deficiency in attacking depth.

He emphasized that other forwards need to step up and play a more decisive role in scoring.

“Every team has its standout player — for Nigeria, that’s Osimhen,” Akpeyi stated.

“However, that doesn’t imply others should become complacent or wait for him to conjure brilliance. The Super Eagles require a team-oriented mentality. Football at this juncture, particularly with FIFA World Cup qualification at stake, necessitates shared responsibility.”

Akpeyi pointed out that excessive reliance on a single player can render the team predictable and simpler for opponents to counteract. He referenced the recent qualifiers, where Nigeria faced difficulties in scoring when Osimhen was absent, as proof that the team must broaden its attacking avenues.

“The moment opponents mark Osimhen, the team appears disoriented,” he remarked. “We need players like Kelechi Iheanacho, Ademola Lookman, and Moses Simon to take initiative and create their own opportunities. Goals can originate from any player — that’s what defines a great team.”

The former Chippa United goalkeeper also called on the coaching staff to promote greater tactical adaptability and fluid movement in the attack. “This isn’t about placing blame on anyone,” he continued.

“It’s about ensuring the Super Eagles possess multiple threats ahead of the World Cup playoffs. If everyone elevates their game, Nigeria will be formidable.”
