Nigeria Takes Lead as Host of Africa Running Conference

The National Sports Commission (NSC), in partnership with World Athletics and the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), is preparing to launch the first Africa Running Conference in Lagos, an important occasion that highlights Nigeria’s increasing role in the global sports arena.

This conference aims to promote health, fitness, and athletic excellence, gathering influential stakeholders from across the continent to discuss the growing possibilities in road running and the economic benefits tied to sports.

During a press conference in Abuja, NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko stated that this event supports President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of using sports as a driver for national progress.

“This conference goes beyond just running,” Dikko remarked. “It represents our dedication to cultivating a vibrant sports economy, one that generates employment, attracts investments, and boosts Nigeria’s international profile.” He pointed out that the rising interest in road running throughout Nigeria indicates a significant potential for economic and social influence.

“Every state is eager to participate now,” he mentioned. “This indicates the potential for enduring impact.” NSC Director General Bukola Olopade praised the collaboration with World Athletics as a “pivotal moment” for sports in Nigeria, emphasizing that it confirms the success of the Tinubu administration’s ongoing sports reforms.

“We are transitioning from a sports nation focused on consumption to one that produces and hosts top-tier events,” Olopade explained.

He also noted that World Athletics’ choice to hold the conference in Lagos, ahead of traditional marathon powerhouses like Kenya and South Africa, reflects the growing global confidence in Nigeria’s abilities and reform efforts.

Alessio Punzi, World Athletics’ Head of Running and Mass Participation, labeled the upcoming event as “a decisive moment for African road running,” and disclosed that it will feature technical workshops for athletics federations from various countries across the continent.

“The Lagos conference aims to establish a comprehensive ecosystem, from grassroots involvement to elite achievements,” Punzi articulated. The Africa Running Conference, being the first of its kind, will act as a venue for collaboration among government entities, private sector stakeholders, and the sports community.

Its goal is to enhance Nigeria’s leadership in promoting health, wellness, and sporting excellence throughout Africa.
