Former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh has provided a harsh critique of Nigeria’s qualification for the World Cup playoffs, warning fans and officials against what he describes as a “culture of celebrating mediocrity.”
Oliseh, who has both captained and coached the national team, remarked that while it is understandable for Nigerians to feel a sense of relief after the Super Eagles maintained their World Cup aspirations, this qualification should not be confused with actual success.
”Qualifying for a playoff should not be a cause for celebration in the streets,” Oliseh stated to reporters. “We are Nigeria — a football powerhouse in Africa. Our standards must exceed merely getting by. We used to set the benchmark; now, we are content with mere survival.”
The 1996 Olympic gold medalist expressed concern that many young fans have not experienced the true supremacy of Nigerian football, noting that the decline in expectations signifies a lack of adequate systems and accountability within the sport.

”Many young Nigerians have never witnessed the Super Eagles when we were feared globally,” he remarked. “They believe that average outcomes are acceptable. This is troubling. The emphasis should be on developing a team that can compete with the best — not one that just manages to qualify.”
Oliseh urged the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) and the technical staff to view the playoffs as a chance to realign their ambitions, asserting that only by striving for excellence can the nation reclaim its former prestige.
”The players possess talent, without a doubt,” he continued. “However, talent alone is insufficient. We require structure, discipline, and conviction. Until we restore our standards, we will continue to celebrate what should be considered normal.”
