Rivers Assembly Speaker Visits Families of Flood Victims

On Monday, October 13, 2025, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, visited the families of two teenagers who lost their lives during Friday’s flash flood in Eligbolo Community in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.

The victims, aged 16 and 17, reportedly drowned while trying to navigate the floodwaters that overwhelmed parts of the community.

Describing the incident as both tragic and heartbreaking, Amaewhule, who represents Obio/Akpor Constituency I, said his visit was to commiserate with the grieving families and gain firsthand insight into the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.

He explained that, “the flood consumed two lives, and after making inquiries, I confirmed that the incident happened here in Eligbolo, Ward 7, in Obio/Akpor Constituency I.

“I felt it was proper to visit the bereaved families and also meet with the chiefs and elders of the community.

“It is really touching for a family to lose two children at once as a result of the flood. From our assessment, it is clear that the drainage and canals in this area are blocked. Something must be done urgently to clear them so that this kind of incident will not happen again.”

He stressed the urgent need for the Rivers State Government to address the issue of poor drainage systems across the state.

According to the Speaker, the disaster highlights the consequences of neglected infrastructure, especially blocked canals that prevent proper water flow.

While expressing his condolences, Amaewhule assured residents that he would relay their concerns to relevant authorities and advocate for immediate intervention.

He also pledged support to the bereaved families during this difficult time.

In response, Mr. Peter Ekpo, father of one of the deceased, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the speaker for his visit and support.

“We are heartbroken, but your presence today has given us comfort. It shows that we are not alone in this pain. We thank you, Rt. Hon. Speaker, for coming to share in our grief and for the financial support you have given to us. May God bless and strengthen you to continue your good work for the people,” he said.

Ekpo and other community members also called on the government to urgently address the drainage challenges in Eligbolo to avert future tragedies.
