Civic Group Warns Cost Of Living May Spark Unrest in the Country

A socio- political and cultural advocacy group in Rivers State, the Opobo Progressive Union(OPU), has warned that Nigeria’s current rising cost of living may spark unrest, if urgent economic and political interventions are not implemented by the government.

Speaking with Our Correspondent in Port-Harcourt on the lingering cost of living in Nigeria, the Deputy Chairman of the group, Warisenibo Sunny Aaron Jaja lamented that millions of Nigerians can no longer cope with skyrocketing food prices, fuel costs, and unemployment.

Warisenibo Aaron -Jaja stressed that the worsening situation could lead to civil agitation, if not promptly addressed.

He said the present hardship is gradually eroding the patience of the common man noting that people are hungry, businesses are collapsing, and even the middle class is sliding into poverty.

” The situation is totally making people more impoverished and the government seems to doing nothing about it. How long can the citizens of this great nation endure this in their own country that is blessed with what it takes to make life comfortable for all” he stated.

Warisenibo Sunny Aaron Jaja urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to deploy”direct, transparent, and human-centred palliative systems to cushion the effects of inflation, warning that if citizens cannot eat, they will eventually revolt.

He therefore called on the government to do the needful and address the rising cost of living as Nigerians are no more comfortable with the hardship especially now the yuletide season is fast approaching.

” Tinubu’s Administration should know that people need food and other basic amenities to survive. When all these all far from the reach of the people especially the low income earners what then say good about the government or governance in the country. The government should hearken to the yearnings of its citizens and come to their aid with that the country will be a better place for all” he added.
