YEAC-Nigeria Condemns Alleged Bombing of Innocent Citizens by Nigerian Air Force in Etche

The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria) has condemned the alleged bombing and shooting of innocent citizens by the Nigerian Air Force in Umuebele 3, Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Reacting on the incident, the Executive Director of YEAC-Nigeria, Dr. Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface, described the incident as “unacceptable and deeply disturbing,” calling for immediate investigation and accountability.

According to the him, the attack, which reportedly occurred on Tuesday, October 7, targeted residents engaged in legitimate livelihoods such as palm wine tapping and local gin production, popularly known as (kai-kai). The incident allegedly resulted in the destruction of properties and means of livelihood, though no casualties were reported.

Dr. Fyneface said the organization received the report from members of its One Million Youth Volunteers Network of Human Rights Defenders and Promoters in the Niger Delta, who described the assault as similar to a previous bombing in Tai Local Government Area, where the Air Force allegedly destroyed a palm oil mill after mistaking it for an illegal refinery.

He expressed disappointment that the Nigerian Air Force had failed to exercise caution despite past errors, emphasizing that the people of Umuebele 3 are predominantly farmers and artisans who depend on their trades for survival.

YEAC-Nigeria therefore called on the Air Force to immediately: Conduct a thorough on-site damage and impact assessment. Compensate affected residents; and refrain from further aerial attacks in the Niger Delta without proper intelligence verification.

The group reaffirmed its solidarity with the victims and the Umuebele 3 community, pledging continued advocacy for justice and the protection of citizens’ rights.
