‎Mikel Urges Eagles’ to Fight for World Cup Ticket with ‘Red Eye’

Mikel Obi has urged the Super Eagles to assume responsibility and achieve the necessary results to sustain their aspirations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup when they compete against Lesotho on Friday in Polokwane, South Africa.

‎During a discussion on the Obi One Podcast with Chris McHardy, the former national team captain cautioned that not qualifying for a second consecutive tournament would be deemed “a crime” and implored the players to eliminate off-field distractions and rise to the challenge.

‎He characterized Nigeria’s qualifying campaign as precarious, noting that the situation remains salvageable if the players commit to representing their country with passion.

‎”First to qualify, you know, again, we’ve seen, you know, fortunate for us, um, South Africa has been penalized with a deduction of three points due to ineligible players,” Mikel stated. “So that’s advantageous for us. At this moment, one could say the group resembles a shootout scenario.

‎”It’s a shootout group. We have Benin at home and must secure victories in both matches. We must win both. We must win both. I am indifferent to the circumstances. I am indifferent to what is occurring. I require the players. I am familiar with many of them in the squad. I need them. We need them. Nigerians need them.”

‎The Super Eagles currently trail South Africa and Benin Republic by three points in Group C and will face Lesotho in Polokwane on Friday before returning to Uyo to host Benin.

‎With only two matches remaining, Mikel emphasized that there is no margin for error: “Our World Cup destiny lies in their hands.”

‎Mikel, who progressed through all levels of Nigerian football, spoke openly about the dynamics within the national team, asserting that the Super Eagles must perform exceptionally to secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup.

‎He added: “I refrain from discussing the national team extensively because I am aware of the ongoing situation. I understand what is transpiring. For many years, I may be the only player. I am uncertain.
