Ignorance Identified as Obstacle to Treatment of Cataract

Nigerians have been advised to eschew ignorance and adhere to medical instructions when diagnosed with cataract to avoid total blindness.

An optometrist, Dr. Pascal Chebendu who made the assertion in an interview with our correspondent described cataract as opacity of the lens which means the inability of the light rays to receive light rays leading to cloudy vision.

Dr. Chebendu listed the factors responsible for cataract to include genetic and age.

“Age is a factor. Those who are in their late fifties because of the breakdown of protein molecules can result to cataract. Those who have diabetes can equally have cataract and degenerate very fast.
Probably, when something hit your eye you can develop it.
Then again, those who expose their eyes to sunlight or naked light will have cataract even those who use steroids,” he stated.

He noted that the symptoms are blurring vision, experiencing difficulty seeing in the day.

Dr. Chebendu warned that healthy living is imperative if cataract would be curtailed and prevented.

“One should avoid anti- inflammatory drugs like steroids, excessive alcohol is another problem.
Then wear fez cap or photo glass which would always prevent your eyes from direct sunlight.
Lastly, good food if you do not eat enough vegetables or fruits and don’t exercise enough you are prone to cataract,” he concluded.

Dr. Chebendu noted that cataract cuts across all ages and urged those diagnosed with the disease not to hesitate to go for surgery when advised to prevent degeneration.

The medical expert explained that it is cheaper to go for regular medical check-up to ascertain the state of the health than to loose total vision.
