Rivers: FUET Seeks Royal Blessings from Gbenemene of Bangha Kingdom in Ogoniland

The management of the Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET), Koroma/Saakpenwa, Rivers State, on Friday, October 4, 2025, paid a courtesy visit to the Gbenemene of Bangha Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, King (Dr.) Baridam Suanu Timothy Yormaadam, in Ogoniland.

‎The delegation, led by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Prince Chinedu Mmom, said the visit was to honour the traditional institution and seek royal blessings as the newly established university begins operations.

‎In his remarks, Prof. Mmom expressed gratitude for the warm reception and called on traditional leaders, youths, and community members to partner with FUET in building an institution that would serve both the region and the nation.

‎“This university is not for Ogoni people alone; it is a federal institution for the entire country,” he said. “When we work together in peace, development will follow, jobs will be created, and progress will come to the land.”

‎The Vice-Chancellor highlighted the presence of eminent scholars and traditional figures, including Professor Don Baridam, a senior prince of the palace, as a sign of strength and assurance for the university’s growth. He described Baridam as a bridge between academia and the community whose wisdom would guide the institution towards excellence in teaching, research, and innovation.

‎Prof. Mmom stressed that FUET’s vision is anchored on environmental stewardship, knowledge transfer, and sustainable development. According to him, the partnership with the host communities would promote education, foster environmental sustainability, and advance shared prosperity.

‎Responding, King Suanu Baridam commended the FUET team for recognising the role of traditional authority and assured them of the community’s full support. He noted that the university’s presence in Ogoniland would not only boost educational opportunities but also strengthen local capacity in addressing environmental challenges in the Niger Delta.

‎The monarch described the institution as a beacon of hope for the region and pledged the cooperation of his people in ensuring its success.

‎The visit, observers say, marks a significant step in building a cordial relationship between FUET and its host communities.
