Rivers State University Reduces Convocation Fees

The Management of Rivers State University (RSU), Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt, has approved a downward review of convocation fees for the forthcoming 37th and 38th Combined Convocation Ceremony scheduled for December 2025.

The decision was reached during a strategic meeting held on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, between the University leadership and the Students’ Union Government (SUG), following concerns raised over the initial fees.

After deliberations and input from student representatives, the revised fees are as follows: Bachelor’s Degree – ₦60,000; Professional/Certificate Programmes – ₦68,000; Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) – ₦125,000; Master’s Degree – ₦125,000; and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) – ₦210,000.

Speaking on behalf of Management, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Isaac Zeb-Obipi, commended the SUG and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) for their constructive engagement, noting that the resolution further strengthened the cordial relationship between Management and the student body. He urged all graduating students, parents, and the public to rely solely on official University communications regarding convocation matters.

They emphasized that the development marks not just a reduction in fees but a defense of the students’ community through collective effort.

The Students further acknowledged the Vice-Chancellor for his openness and willingness to listen, describing him as a “digital VC” attuned to students’ needs.

With the revision approved, the planned protest slated for October 2, 2025, has been called off. Student representatives described the outcome as a significant victory, affirming that “our voices have been heard.”
