Nigerian Striker Osimhen Sets New UCL Record

Super Eagles forward, Victor Osimhen, achieved a significant milestone in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, becoming the first Nigerian player to score ten goals in the competition’s history (excluding qualifying rounds).

‎The 26-year-old was included in manager Okan Buruk’s starting eleven as Turkish Super Lig powerhouse, Galatasaray, hosted the reigning Premier League champions, Liverpool, at Rams Park during a match on the second day of the UCL.

‎Osimhen, who was making his first full start for the Red and Gold since recovering from an ankle injury sustained during Nigeria’s World Cup qualification matches against Rwanda and South Africa in the last international break, scored from the penalty spot in the 16th minute.

‎The center referee awarded a penalty to Galatasaray after Liverpool midfielder, Dominik Szoboszlai, committed a foul in the penalty area, allowing Osimhen to convert past Alisson Becker from 12 yards, marking his first goal in Europe’s premier club competition this season.

‎This goal brought Osimhen’s total to 10 goals in the Champions League proper. He is followed by Obafemi Martins with nine goals, and Ademola Lookman, Nwankwo Kanu, Victor Ikpeba, and Yakubu Aiyegbeni, each with five goals.
