Nigerian Army Inaugurates New Housing Units at Port Harcourt Barracks

The Nigerian Army has inaugurated Officer Transit accommodations at Port Harcourt Barracks to further reduce the housing challenges faced by officers and men of the force.

Speaking during the commissioning exercise on Tuesday, September 30, the Chief of Special Services and Programmes, Nigerian Army, Major General Jamal Abdul Salam stated that the newly constructed 16 units of Single Rooms, two double room flats, a central kitchen facility, Dining room were constructed in line with the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Oluyede philosophy of prioritizing soldiers welfare.

“This type of project is in line with the Chief of Army Staff Philosophy which places the soldier first and as you can see everything that is within this complex is meant for the soldiers.”

He has been able to build this edifice that will accommodate nothing less than forty to fifty soldiers, so I think it’s a very commendable project and this is what the army is now doing not only here but everywhere you go, everybody wants to emulate what the Chief of Army Staff is doing.”

Major General Abdulsalam stated that the Chief of Army Staff has amplified policies geared towards ensuring that Soldiers need which has resulted in operational successes in various Army formations across the country.

“The welfare of soldiers has never been as good as this since the creation of the Nigerian Army, I can say that so many welfare aspects of the soldiers have been tackled, the ration cash allowance of soldiers has been doubled since the Chief of Army Staff came.”

So many issues that have to do with soldiers have been handled, their medicals, their accommodations as you can see here is being handled, the education of their wards and children is being handled.”

Earlier in his address, the General Officer Commanding, GOC, 6 Division Major General Eric Emekah said that the project was idealized by the immediate past GOC of the Division and its commissioning stands as a tangible evidence of continuity, growth, and shared commitment to the well-being of Nigerian Army personnel.

“I am pleased to inform you that we will complement the solid foundation laid during your tenure. Your legacies are enduring, and be assured that they will not
only be preserved but improved upon”

Major General Emekah added that construction work is currently ongoing on a 60-unit block of flats within the division designed to further address accommodation deficit faced by officers
