As Nigeria joins the global community to commemorate the International Day of Older Persons today, stakeholders have renewed calls for stronger social security systems and improved healthcare for the elderly.
This year’s celebration, themed “Older Persons Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspirations, Our Well-Being, and Our Rights,” underscores the need to protect the rights and dignity of senior citizens while recognizing their invaluable contributions to society.
The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed October 1 as International Day of Older Persons in 1990, to highlight issues affecting the aged and to celebrate their role in nation building.
Speaking with Radio Nigeria, a member of the Rumuodomaya Council of Chiefs and Elders, Elder Eric Ekwe, appealed to the government to introduce a monthly payroll for older persons, adding that their voices should count in governance.
Another elder, Mr. Nse Adam, stressed the need for functional healthcare facilities tailored to their needs. According to him, many senior citizens endure financial hardship and crippling medical expenses despite years of service to the country.

Similarly, social commentator Mr. Mufasa Eyinmosan described elders as “custodians of wisdom and experience,” emphasizing their role as mentors and sources of inspiration for the younger generation.
Stakeholders agreed that the true measure of a nation’s progress lies in how it treats its elderly population, urging governments at all levels to build an inclusive society where older persons are respected, supported, and celebrated.
