The Rivers State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has announced a seven-day warning strike, instructing local government workers across the state to suspend service effective midnight, September 30, 2025.
According to the letter signed by the Unions Secretary General, Comrade Sunday Adeniran, on monday said the union cited the “callous and unfair action” of the Emohua Local Government Area chairman for withholding members’ salaries as the trigger for the strike.
“All local government employees across the state are hereby directed to withdraw their service immediately until further notice,” the statement said, urging members to comply in solidarity.

It remains unclear whether negotiations have begun or if intervention from state authorities is anticipated to avert a full industrial conflict.
This development comes amid a backdrop of recurring wage disputes between local government workers and council administrations in Nigeria. NULGE, which represents municipal and local council staff nationwide, often resorts to strikes when salary arrears persist.
As the strike unfolds, many communities may face interruptions in essential local services including waste management, public health, and administrative functions. Stakeholders and residents will be watching closely to see how the River State government responds and whether affected workers will be paid.
