Today marks the end of World Retina week, and the Rivers State Ministry of Health is emphasizing the significance of eye health and vision care. The ministry, as published on it’s official Facebook page today, is urging residents to prioritize their eye health by raising awareness about retinal diseases.
The retina is located at the back of the eye. It works like a microprocessor by converting light entering the eye via the iris into an electrical signal, which is passed through the optic nerve to the brain. The brain then processes these signals to produce visual images.
Here are some ways that you can take to preserve your precious sight: regular eye tests, getting more than 7 hours sleep a night, controlling blood pressure, cholesterol, tummy fat and blood glucose levels, exercising regularly, eating a healthy, colourful diet, and protecting your eyes against sunlight and excessive screen time. Always visit your optometrist, avoid smoking and drinking.

Retinal diseases, such as Retinitis Pigmentosa, Diabetic Macular Edema, and Age-related Macular Degeneration, can cause degeneration of the retina, leading to vision loss. These conditions often have no symptoms in the early stages, making regular eye screenings crucial for early detection and treatment.
Early detection and treatment of retinal diseases can significantly improve treatment outcomes. Regular eye exams can help identify potential issues before symptoms arise. The Rivers State Ministry of Health is committed to providing quality and standard health facilities, including eye care services, to promote the well-being of residents.
As part of its efforts to prioritize eye health, the ministry is working to ensure that residents have access to quality eye care services.
