Obio/Akpor Chairman Meets Community Leaders, Seeks to End Roadside Trading

The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Dr. Gift Worlu, on Saturday met with Leaders and indigenes of Rumuodumaya Community in his first official visit after his swearing into office.

Dr. Worlu who expressed gratitude to God and the people for electing him, emphasizing that his victory was made possible by the support of leaders, women, youths, and traditional rulers.

He informed the traditional ruler and people of Rumuodumaya that work had resumed fully at the Council Secretariat, and as the host community, it was proper for him to pay homage to them.

“This is the first community I am visiting because I know what it means for a community to donate their lands for public use.”

He assured the Nyewe-Eli Rumuodumaya, His Royal Highness, Eze Bright Akpununu, Rumuodomaya will not be left out in his developmental plans for the local government area.

While recalling that as Caretaker Chairman in 2015, he visited the palace of the Nyewe-Eli and reaffirmed that respect for traditional institutions, the Chairman reiterated that anyone who aspires to be Chairman of Obio/Akpor must pay respect to the Rumuodumaya people.

Dr. Worlu lamented the chaotic state of the Rumuodumaya road where traders and motorists have encroached on parts of the road, causing gridlock. He expressed displeasure at the indiscriminate use of houses, frontages, and backyards as market stalls.

He stated that he had met with the Community Development Committee (CDC) to seek an alternative site for the market, assuring that Rumuodumaya women would be prioritized.

The chairman promised regular engagement with the community to jointly tackle challenges and urged the community women to join cooperative societies in order to gain financial independence which he noted leads to wealth creation.

In his speech, the Paramount Ruler of Rumuodumaya, His Royal Highness, Eze Bright Akpununu, clarified that most of the traders selling on the road and obstructing traffic were not indigenes of Rumuodumaya.

Eze Akpunonu lamented the inadequate compensation of the community after its land was acquired by government acquisition.

The paramount ruler pledged the unwavering support of the community to the success of the Chairman’s administration and expressed optimism that his leadership would bring development.

The Chairman was accompanied by the Leader of the Obio/Akpor Legislative Council, Hon. Rex Milla Abuchi Amadi; and the Head of Local Government Administration, Mr. Sunny Adibe.
