Dangote Refinery Restructures Workforce Over Sabotage Concerns

Dangote Group

The management of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has announced a major reorganisation of its operations and workforce following repeated cases of sabotage that threatened the safety of its 650,000 barrels-per-day facility.

In a letter dated September 24, 2025, and signed by Femi Adekunle, Chief General Manager, Human Asset Management, the refinery said it was “constrained to carry out a total reorganisation of the plant” after several reported incidents of sabotage in different units of the refinery. Affected staff were asked to return company property to their line managers and await clearance for entitlements in line with their conditions of service.

However, a senior official of the refinery dismissed claims that the move amounted to mass sackings. Speaking with journalists on Friday, the official explained that the exercise was targeted at plugging leakages and addressing internal sabotage.

“Yes, the letter is authentic, but the interpretation is wrong. It does not mean workers have been sacked. This is a system clean-up to trace where sabotage is happening and address it. Once the issues are resolved, those affected may be reabsorbed,” the official clarified.

He further explained that the decision was implemented without prior notice to prevent those involved from covering their tracks. “Some acts of sabotage have been observed repeatedly, and this move is to safeguard company assets,” he added.

The official stressed that refinery operations remain active, with both Nigerian and expatriate staff still engaged at the facility.
