CAF Picks Algerian Officials For Rivers United, Les Aigles Clash

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed the appointment of Algerian officials to take charge of Rivers United’s crucial CAF Champions League first-round, second-leg clash against DR Congo’s FC Les Aigles.

Referee Houssam Benyahia will lead the officiating crew when the “Pride of Nigeria” host the “Eagles of Congo” on Sunday, September 28, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo. Kick-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. Nigerian time.

Benyahia will be supported by fellow Algerians Hamza Bouzit (Assistant Referee 1) and Haithem Bouima (Assistant Referee 2). Another compatriot, Loutfi Bekouassa, will act as the fourth official, ensuring an all-Algerian refereeing team for the high-stakes encounter. The match commissioner will be Munkaila Nassam Adam from Ghana.

The appointment underscores CAF’s commitment to maintaining neutrality and professionalism in its continental competitions. For Rivers United, the game represents an opportunity to consolidate their continental ambitions after the first-leg battle in DR Congo.

Club officials have expressed confidence in the team’s readiness, highlighting home advantage and strong fan support as key factors that could tilt the balance in their favour. With Uyo set to provide a charged atmosphere, supporters are being urged to turn out in large numbers to rally behind Nigeria’s remaining representatives on the continent.

All eyes will now be on Uyo this weekend as Rivers United look to outclass their Congolese opponents and book a spot in the next round of Africa’s premier club competition.
