Bonny LG Chairman Approves N2M Bursary For Students, Promises Renovation Of NUBS Secretariat

In a deliberate effort to promote education, the Chairman of Bonny Local Government Area, Amasenibo Hon. Abinye Blessing Pepple, has approved the disbursement of over ₦20 million in bursaries to 1,049 students.

According to the chairman, the bursary support is for students from Bonny studying in public tertiary institutions across Nigeria.

This was revealed in a statement on Wednesday, September 24, as made available to the media by the Chief Press Secretary of Bonny Local Government Area, Mr Wisdom Chapp-Jumbo, where the chairman stated that each student would receive ₦20,000, with the chairman promising a possible upward review in the future.

According to the statement, Pepple declared his readiness to approve the bursary support on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the National Union of Bonny Students (NUBS) Worldwide, led by its President, Comrade Jumbo Precious Tamunoipiriala, at the Government Lodge in Bonny.

The chairman also announced that renovations on the NUBS Secretariat would commence on Monday, September 29, 2025, with completion targeted for the first week of November.

He also approved a monthly subvention of ₦100,000 for the Secretariat’s operations and an annual ₦1 million grant to support the Union’s convention.

He further encouraged students aged 18 and above to actively participate in the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise to strengthen Bonny’s political influence and attract more development.

In his response, the NUBS president congratulated the chairman on his election victory and expressed gratitude for the release of the bursary.

Jumbo acknowledged that while the process began under the previous local government administrator during the emergency rule, the current administration had ensured its successful implementation.

The NUBS President also praised Pepple for what he described as his longstanding support for Bonny students, dating back to his time in the Rivers State House of Assembly.

He, however, drew attention to some pressing challenges faced by the union, including the poor state of the NUBS Secretariat, lack of funding for its annual convention, and the need for an official vehicle.

In recognition of his unwavering support for education and student welfare, the union conferred on the chairman the title of Chief Patron.
