Rivers PDP Dismisses Speculation of Fubara’s Defection to APC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State has dismissed speculations suggesting that Governor Siminalayi Fubara may be preparing to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking in Port Harcourt, the state chairman of the party, Robinson Ewor, said the PDP is not unsettled by such claims. According to him, whatever political decision Governor Fubara chooses to make remains a personal matter.

“As an individual, the governor has every legitimate right to pursue any political interest he deems fit, provided such a move serves the collective good of Rivers people who entrusted him with their mandate,” Ewor stated.

He added that he was not aware of any plan by the governor to leave the PDP, nor had Fubara communicated such an intention to him.

The speculation about Fubara’s political future intensified following his recent visit to the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where he was ushered into President Bola Tinubu’s office by the Imo State Governor and Chairman of the APC Governors’ Forum, Senator Hope Uzodimma.

Observers also noted the governor’s omission of any reference to the PDP’s role in defending democracy in Rivers during his statewide broadcast on September 18. The broadcast marked his return to office after a six-month emergency rule declared by President Tinubu on March 18.

During the emergency period, at least 11 PDP governors had challenged the federal government in court, seeking to overturn the decision, which many Nigerians described as unconstitutional. Reports had earlier suggested that one of the conditions in the peace pact allegedly signed by Fubara in June was his defection to the APC.

Despite these claims, Ewor maintained that the PDP in Rivers remains focused and unconcerned about rumours, stressing that the party will continue to safeguard the interest of the people.
