Parliamentarians Urged to Formulate Laws to Facilitate African Themed Services

ECOWAS Parliamentarians have been urged to formulate laws that would ensure swift implementation of African Developed Artificial Intelligence to meet up with demands of different sectors in the region.

This was the position of experts who presented papers on the role of Artificial Intelligence in improving Security, Health Care and Agriculture in West Africa at the on going ECOWAS Parliamentary session in Port Harcourt

Following the innovations that have heralded Artificial Intelligence, AI, an Information and Communication Technology expert Dr. Christian Odo called on ECOWAS Parliament to formulate laws that would enable Africans to build indigenous AI tailored to meet the needs of the continent.

Dr. Odo while delivering a seminar on AI for Parliamentary Efficiency and Oversight at the ongoing Second Session of the lamented censorship of AI resources from some western countries.

He noted that Artificial Intelligence when tailored to African needs can be utilized to translate real time parliamentary procedures, track government spending against approved budget and tackle misinformation and disinformation.

Making his submission during a paper presentation on AI deployment in the health sector, Mr. Ukuyoma Theophilus acknowledged that the brain drain in the African Health Sector and healthcare inequalities in Urban and rural African cities can be addressed using Artificial Intelligence.

The Member representing Rivers South East Senatorial District, Dr. Ipalibo Banigo said there is a need for Nigeria to leverage telemedicine platforms to improve coverage of health services in rural areas.

She called for improvement of telecommunication infrastructure which would further enhance access to health care and improve data on the health status of Nigerians.

The Second Session of the Extraordinary Session of ECOWAS Parliament has seen experts x-ray the role of artificial intelligence in optimizing productivity in Agriculture, advancing peace, counter terrorism and public safety.
