A car explosion at Rivers State University (RSU) in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, caused significant damage but left no casualties, authorities confirmed.
The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the morning, sent shockwaves across the campus as students and staff scrambled for safety. Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle, parked near one of the academic blocks, suddenly caught fire before erupting into an explosion that shook nearby buildings
According to reports, the vehicle’s owner had earlier observed signs of overheating before the explosion occurred. The Rivers State Fire Service was swiftly deployed to the scene, where firefighters battled the flames and prevented the fire from spreading to adjoining structures.
Though the blast damaged parts of the surrounding environment, officials confirmed that no injuries were recorded. The quick response of the fire service and campus security helped to restore calm to the university community.
