‎WhatsApp Is Testing An Option To Mute ‘Everyone’ Mentions

‎WhatsApp is said to be developing a new feature for Android that enhances user control over group chats by enabling them to mute ‘everyone’ mentions. A feature tracker indicates that this forthcoming tool aims to minimize the irritation caused by frequent or unnecessary notifications, thereby adding a layer of personalization to the management of group conversations.

‎WABetaInfo reported that WhatsApp is working on a new feature that has been identified in Beta for Android version 2.25.27.1. This update is compatible with the current beta version and suggests that the Meta-owned messaging platform is gearing up to enhance user controls for group chats in an upcoming release.

‎A screenshot shared by WABetaInfo shows a new “Mute @everyone” option found beneath the existing mute toggle in the notifications settings of WhatsApp for Android. This option is disabled by default, meaning users must manually activate it if they want to stop receiving notifications from everyone mentions.

‎This feature is intended to counterbalance the current “@everyone” tool, which allows both admins and group members to send a notification to all participants simultaneously.

‎While beneficial in certain situations, it has raised concerns regarding potential misuse and spam-like interruptions, leading WhatsApp to create a solution for users to avoid these unwanted alerts.

‎Once launched, this feature will enable users to suppress notifications triggered by “@everyone” mentions, even if group chats are muted. Simultaneously, WhatsApp will provide flexibility by allowing users to opt to continue receiving these notifications if they choose, through customizable notification settings.

‎At present, the mute everyone mentions feature is still in development and has not yet been made available to beta testers enrolled in the Google Play Beta program. Reports indicate that it may be ready for testing in the upcoming weeks before being officially launched in a future WhatsApp update.
