PDP Chieftain: Any Party with Obi Secures 40% of Votes

A prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dan Ulasi, has expressed readiness to welcome former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, back to the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on a national television programme on Friday, Ulasi said Obi’s credibility and popularity would significantly strengthen the party’s electoral chances, describing him as a political force with nationwide support.

“I’ll be happy if he rejoins the PDP because he will bring his credibility to bear on the party as we are reorganising. Any party that has him today already has more than 30 to 40 per cent of the votes because he enjoys tremendous support across this country,” he said.

The PDP stalwart, however, noted that Obi’s political future remains uncertain, pointing out that while he ran on the Labour Party platform in 2023, he has also been seen at other political gatherings, leaving questions about his next move.

“To the best of my knowledge, Peter Obi has no definite platform. He ran last time with Labour Party, he has attended the launch of ADC. I don’t know what his platform will be,” he added.

On zoning, Ulasi stressed the need for fairness in the selection of the party’s presidential ticket, insisting that the South-East deserves a chance at the presidency.

“If there is honesty, the PDP should micro-zone it to the South-East because, theoretically speaking, we are the only region that has not produced a Nigerian president,” he said.

He further disclosed that the party is currently focused on rebuilding its structures and repositioning for the 2027 elections.

“At the last national executive meeting, almost seven of our governors were present. It was refreshing to see everyone talking about how to reorganise the party and place it on a stronger footing ahead of 2027 and subsequent elections,” Ulasi stated.

Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, served as the PDP’s vice-presidential candidate in 2019. He left the party in May 2022 after withdrawing from its presidential primaries and later emerged as the Labour Party’s candidate.

His campaign, driven by the “Obidient Movement,” gained massive youth support and disrupted Nigeria’s traditional two-party contest in the 2023 elections, where he placed third behind President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP.
