MTN Nigeria Communications Plc has announced that it has obtained regulatory approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to lease frequency spectrum from T2 Mobile Limited, formerly known as 9Mobile. The lease agreement takes effect from October 1, 2025.
Under the terms, MTN will lease 5MHz frequency division duplex (FDD) in the 900MHz band and 15MHz FDD in the 1800MHz band from T2 Mobile for a three-year period.
The arrangement is designed to support the national roaming agreement between both companies, enabling MTN to absorb additional network traffic from T2 customers while utilizing its own infrastructure.
In a statement to the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX), MTN explained that the initiative reflects a broader industry collaboration that combines spectrum trading with infrastructure sharing. The company said the deal underscores its long-term commitment to advancing digital inclusion and strengthening Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.
Commenting on the development, MTN Nigeria Chief Executive Officer, Karl Toriola, described the approval as a strategic milestone. He said the agreement was consistent with the company’s Ambition 2025 strategy, which focuses on expanding network capacity and enhancing connectivity across the country.
“We are delighted with this achievement, which reinforces our commitment to providing reliable and high-quality services to our customers,” Toriola said. “By leveraging additional spectrum, we can deliver improved capacity in a cost-efficient and environmentally sustainable manner.

Toriola further disclosed that MTN would not renew its current one-year lease agreement with Natcom Development and Investment Limited (Ntel). The deal, which covers spectrum in the 900MHz and 1800MHz bands across 17 states, is set to expire on November 29, 2025.
He stressed that MTN remains committed to investing in partnerships and infrastructure that will ensure the continued delivery of innovative, high-quality telecommunications services nationwide.
