The United States Mission in Nigeria has clarified that visa application fees are non-refundable, stating that the policy is consistent with international practice.
In a statement released on Tuesday via its official X handle, the Mission explained that the fees cover the administrative costs of processing applications, regardless of whether a visa is granted. It added that every application is given a thorough and fair review.
“We hear your concerns regarding U.S. visa application fees. Like most countries, U.S. visa fees cover the cost of processing the application, regardless of the outcome,” the statement read. “While fees are non-refundable and non-transferable, each application is reviewed thoroughly and fairly.”
The Mission encouraged Nigerians seeking visas to prepare their applications carefully and follow available guidelines to reduce the chances of denial, revocation, or cancellation. Applicants are advised to schedule interviews at U.S. embassies or consulates in their country of residence or nationality.
In addition, the Mission announced that, with immediate effect, all individuals applying for F, M, or J non-immigrant visas must adjust their social media privacy settings to “public” to assist with identity verification and vetting.

The Mission also drew attention to a Presidential Proclamation that takes effect on June 9, 2025, restricting or suspending visa issuance and entry to nationals of certain countries. It noted that while individuals from affected countries may still apply and attend interviews, they could be found ineligible for visas or entry into the U.S.
Applicants were further reminded of changes introduced in April 2025, requiring that all DS-160 forms presented during interviews in Abuja and Lagos carry a confirmation barcode beginning with “AA00.” Any mismatch between the barcode and the scheduled appointment will result in disqualification.
The Mission urged applicants to consult its official website for comprehensive resources and guidance.
