Terry G Says Parenting Fuels Failure Among Nigerian Youths

Afrobeats singer Gabriel Oche Amanyi, popularly known as Terry G, has sparked a wave of introspection online after addressing the long-term impact of poor parental upbringing on the lives of many Nigerians.

In a post shared via his X handle, the Akpako Master argued that many young Nigerians are trapped in cycles of self-doubt, low self-esteem, and failure due to the negative words they were exposed to during childhood. He explained that harsh declarations from parents, often made in anger, can shape a child’s mindset well into adulthood.

“Our Nigerian parents really do many of us strong things,” he wrote. “When you come under my post saying you’ll never make it, that’s not really you speaking, it’s the voice of what you grew up hearing at home.”

Terry G emphasised that many adults unknowingly carry the emotional residue of their upbringing, repeating limiting beliefs instilled by their parents. He urged Nigerians to break the cycle and adopt a positive mindset, stressing that transformation begins with self-awareness and mental reconditioning.

“Now you see you’ve carried that same energy into adulthood, and that’s why many are stuck in failure. It’s time to break that cycle. It’s time to change that mindset.”

His message has resonated widely, with fans, educators, and mental health advocates applauding his honesty and calling for more conversations around parenting, emotional intelligence, and healing from childhood trauma.

Terry G’s post adds to a growing chorus of Nigerian celebrities using their platforms to challenge cultural norms and promote mental wellness.
