Stakeholders Call for Clampdown on Emission of Harmful Gas

On the occasion of the International Day for Preservation of the Ozone Layer, the need to protect the atmosphere from harmful substances such as vehicular emissions, bunkering activities and other environmental hazards has been emphasized.

The Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences of the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rivers State, Professor Hyginus Oku who stated this in an interview in Port Harcourt, called for better policies in the country that will protect the the environment.

Professor Oku said that environment friendly policies that align with the change in climate would reduce the depletion of the ozone layer.

“We are not recycling things, recycling can help reduce the waste in the country.”

Similarly, the National Publicity Secretary of the Waste Management Society of Nigeria, Mr. Benson Abu wants individuals and corporate bodies to manage their production pattern and produce things that are environmentally friendly.

“We must also be able to know the kind of materials and the things we produce, Are they actually environmentally friendly, are they recyclable and do they have an impact on the environment or the ozone layer.”

Mr Abu called for intense sensitization of the populace on issues that affect the atmosphere and how it can be protected.

The International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is celebrated on September 16, annually and this year’s theme is; from Science to Global Action.
