NSC Pays Nigerian Athletes’ Allowances at World Athletics Championships

Nigeria’s athletes competing at the ongoing 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo have been settled. The announcement was made today in a statement issued by the NSC’s Director of Press, Dr. Kehinde Ajayi. According to the release, the NSC Director General, Bukola Olopade, reassured the athletes of the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to their welfare during a meeting with the team and officials of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) in Tokyo.

This came as a shock to many Nigerians, as in the past, the AFN and the NSC were notorious for not paying Athletes bonuses and allowances in competitions.

Olopade acknowledged past challenges that had created friction between athletes and sports authorities, but emphasized that reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, including the establishment of the NSC led by Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko, were aimed at improving sports administration and guaranteeing better treatment for athletes.

“I understand the difficulties faced in the past, and that is why reforms have been put in place. Chairman Dikko is fully committed to ensuring our athletes receive the care they deserve,” Olopade stated.

He urged the athletes to uphold patriotism in both their performance and personal conduct, reminding them that they embody Nigeria’s image before the global community.

“You are the mirror through which the world sees our country. Always carry yourselves as true ambassadors of Nigeria,” he said.

Olopade also addressed lingering issues between the AFN and athletes, expressing confidence that ongoing dialogue would foster a more harmonious relationship. He stressed that the Commission’s top mandate remains prioritizing the welfare of every Nigerian athlete representing the nation.
