Rivers United vs Shooting Stars: Match Preview

After nearly two weeks without action, top-flight football is back at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium this Sunday (4 p.m.) as Rivers United host Shooting Stars in an eagerly anticipated Nigeria Premier Football League clash. The Pride of Rivers remain unbeaten in their last three outings, collecting one victory and two draws.

History has not been kind to the Oluyole Warriors in Port Harcourt. They have failed to earn a single point or even score a goal in their previous five league visits to Rivers United. Newly appointed coach Nurudeen Aweroro, still in search of his first NPFL win with the club, will hope to change that narrative.

Shooting Stars endured an off-season rebuild after finishing eighth last campaign and missing out on continental competition. Aweroro recruited several experienced names — including Austin Onyemaechi, Jamiu Opeyemi, Chidiebere Nnachi, Monsoor Saleh, Promise Awosanmi, and Ozovehe Emmanuel — yet results remain elusive. They sit 16th on the table with just two points from three games, following a home defeat to Bayelsa United and back-to-back draws against Bendel Insurance and Ikorodu City.
Current Form
Rivers United: Draw – Win – Draw
Shooting Stars: Draw – Draw – Loss

Rivers United captain Temple Emekayi is unavailable as he serves the final game of a three-match suspension for a red card on the opening weekend. Rivers United have claimed five straight home league victories over Shooting Stars without conceding.

They’ve netted eight goals in those fixtures. Since 2016, the Pride of Rivers have never allowed the Oluyole Warriors to score in Port Harcourt. Shooting Stars remain unbeaten away from home this season.

The most recent encounter came 331 days ago, when Rivers United triumphed 2–0 thanks to goals from Okon Aniekeme and Ndifreke Effiong. In June 2024, Nyima Nwagua’s strike earned a 1–0 win. Joseph Onoja’s brace in 2022 and earlier victories from John Odumegwu (2017) and Guy Kuemian with Frederick Obomate (2016) underline Rivers United’s dominance on home turf.

Fans can catch the action live via npfl-live.com or the NPFL Live App. Rivers United will also provide live text commentary across their social media platforms starting at 2:30 p.m. on matchday.
