Okocha’s Ambition: Nigeria’s Opportunity to Football Excellence

Nigerian football legend Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha’s ambition to become NFF President is possible if the election is conducted transparently, without cheating, manipulation, or the usual politics that have hindered our football federation.

For years, Nigerian football has been run by politicians and power brokers who know little about the game. That is why we continue to struggle, from poor management of the Super Eagles to neglect of grassroots development. What Nigeria needs now is a leader with genuine passion and knowledge of the sport.

This is why Okocha fits that picture. He is not just a former player; he is someone who understands the game inside out. With his experience in Europe’s top leagues, he has seen how proper football administration works.

His name commands respect globally, and that could attract sponsorships and partnerships that the NFF desperately needs. Most importantly, he has the credibility to inspire both players and fans.

As Nigeria struggles to qualify for the World Cup, the blame should not fall on the players or the coach alone. Much of the problem lies with football authorities who make poor plans, fail to take the right decisions, and interfere with who the coach should be.

Always changing coaches at will without giving them time to build and blend with the team only worsens the situation. With the right leadership in place, Nigeria will hire only competent and qualified coaches, giving them the support needed to build a cohesive and competitive team.

We have seen what is possible with Samuel Eto’o in Cameroon. As a former footballer, Eto’o has brought fresh ideas and given players a stronger voice in administration. If Okocha gets the same chance here, he could do even better, considering Nigeria’s football potential.

With proper leadership, the NFF could revive grassroots football and discover new talent across the country. Player and coach welfare can finally improve, ending unpaid allowances and poor preparation.

The domestic league could become professional to attract investors and restore its lost glory. Most importantly, Nigerian football would finally move away from politics and put the game first above all.
