The Vice Chancellor of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Professor Okechuku Onuchuku, has described the appointment of Hon. Chinyere Igwe as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the institution as “transformative.”
In a statement issued on Friday, September 12, Prof. Onuchuku said the appointment was “well-deserved and divinely ordained,” commending the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister and the Federal Government for what he called a visionary decision.
“I wish to heartily congratulate my worthy and dependable brother, Hon. Chinyere Igwe, on his well-merited appointment as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Board of our Ignatius Ajuru University of Education. I am overjoyed and deeply thankful to the Almighty God and the Honourable Minister of the FCT for this laudable decision,” Onuchuku stated.
The Vice Chancellor noted that Igwe’s emergence comes at a time of significant transformation at IAUE, expressing confidence that his leadership will strengthen the university’s growth, governance, and strategic direction.
Reflecting on Igwe’s ordeals earlier in the year, including what he described as an “unjust detention,” Onuchuku said the new role symbolises resilience and triumph.

“That your awful detention didn’t go in vain. Your resilience and courage continue to inspire us. This appointment is not only a personal victory but a win for all who believe in justice, service, and the brighter future of our university,” he added.
Under Prof. Onuchuku’s leadership, IAUE has recorded progress in academic quality, infrastructural development, and stakeholder engagement, with the administration also credited for tackling cultism and other campus vices.
Hon. Igwe, a seasoned public servant and education advocate, is expected to bring additional value to the institution. His appointment has been widely welcomed by the university community, alumni, and stakeholders in Rivers State, who expressed optimism that the synergy between him and the Vice Chancellor will usher in a new era of academic excellence.
